Meet Some of Our Dolphins

Indicator #0147This dolphin's name is Indicator (#0147). In our early sighting history of this dolphin, there are several photos from July, August, and September. Later sightings in his/her photo history with us, 1997 to present, are all October through April - what we would call a winter dolphin. The presence of Indicator, with his/her recent preference for cold water months, indicates to us the change in seasons: the presence of the summer dolphins changing over to the winter dolphin population.
Clubfoot #0191Aaah, Clubfoot (#0191)…..he/she was the first original match we made with another research area, Virginia Beach. Gosh, that was Back in 1994! WOW!!
Kimmm #0569This dolphin's name is Kimmm (#0569) is another dolphin seen in all seasons, though not in all seasons every year. Kimmm has been photographed in every month of the year but June. Hmmm….
Candlestick #2077This dolphin's name is Candlestick (#2077)This is the third dolphin in the "Kimmm" family. In early photos, #2077 more closely resembles the other two dorsal fin shapes. In one year, from January 1999 to March 2000, there was a big change in the fin, although some of the features remain the same. Can you find them? This member of the "Kimmm" family was originally called "False Kimmm", but the change in fin shape brought a change in name to Candlestick. Candlestick has so far proven to be strictly a winter dolphin - he/she has never been photographed in Beaufort in April - September.
Ocrab #0086Ocrab (#0086) is another summer dolphin and a known mom.  She, too, is a southern traveler frequently seen in Wilmington.  We have seen her with three calves in the years since 1985.  As you can see, her most prominent feature is her leading edge cut.
Drawknife #0143Drawknife (#0143) has been seen often with Keyhole. Both are summer dolphins who travel at least down to Wilmington, NC when not here in the Beaufort waters.
Boot #0160Boot (#0160) is one of our winter dolphins. In March of 2000, we were able to match a portrait of Boot with a photograph taken by our colleagues in Virginia Beach. So, at least in the summer of 1999, we know that Boot was up visiting the northern waters off of Virginia Beach, VA.
