Activities

Fishing

Marine animal identification is one of our favorite activities. We have the participants drag a seine net through the water either in the ocean at the rock jetty or in the bight. They catch a variety of minnows and juvenile fish that we identify and return to the water. Some of our more interesting catches have been a Sargassum Fish, a Sargassum Crab, and a Northern Stargazer. Sometimes we use scoop nets or cast nets. Cast nets are good for mullet off the dock. We also have a good "field guide" library at the field station that we encourage the participants to use.
