Fresh water on a Barrier Island

Since the density of fresh water is less than salt water it floats on top. Under a Barrier Island a fresh water lens forms so it is possible to find fresh water only a few feet deep and a few feet from the ocean. In this activity we have the participants dig a series of holes from the surf to the dune line and collect water samples. Then we measure the salinity or salt content of the samples and have a taste test. Most are hesitant at first, but surprised to taste fresh water. We are using a salinometer donated by YSI Environmental
