Birding

The Cape is a great place for birding. You can see all kinds of shorebirds such as Sanderlings, Willets, Plovers, Red Knots, Ruddy Turnstones, Dunlins, Curlews, and Oyster Catchers. The point is alive at night and early dawn with Royal Terns, Least Terns, Sandwich Terns, other Terns, Great Black-backed Gulls, other Gulls, and Black Skimmers. In the interior are Northern Flickers, Bobwhites, and Great-crested Flycatchers. Common Nighthawks cruise the twilight skies. At night the calls of the Chuck-wills Widow fill the night. In the fall the bushes are full of Yellow-rumped Warblers and you may see a Kestrel, Merlin, or Peregrine Falcon. These are just some of the birds you may see on a bird walk. In summer Least Terns, Black Skimmers, and Oyster Catchers nest out on the point but they are always in danger of being run over by vehicles or trampled by visitors. A few Piping Plovers still nest in the park.
